Radiology

Radiology is a medical specialty that essentially uses imaging techniques to detect diseases. Imaging tests include x-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and other inspection methods. In addition to diagnosis, radiation therapy methods such as radiation therapy and treatment are also used. Radiologists are highly specialized experts who mainly deal with diagnostic imaging. X-rays are the oldest technique in radiology and are also used by other doctors. Doctors began using X-rays as early as the 19th century. X-ray technology has advanced to this day, and digital recording of X-ray images has become a standard practice in radiology. It is one of the pillars of diagnostic radiology. The most common is an X-ray examination of the chest organs. During the X-ray process, the X-ray beam penetrates the human body and is recorded by the detector behind it. This enables the recording of static images of bones and internal organs. For example, it can also be used to detect lung disease on chest x-rays. When using X-rays, the human body is exposed to radiation. The risk of illness is therefore very low.

Diagnostic radiology includes the detection of diseases. It includes various non-invasive imaging techniques. The areas of nuclear medicine and radiation therapy are closely related to the area of radiology, but have developed into independent areas in Germany.

Diagnostic radiology includes neuroradiology and pediatric radiology as sub-areas. There are other areas of focus such as interventional radiology. Radiation protection and the effects of radiation exposure on the human body are also important for the medical profession. Interventional radiology includes minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic measures that are permanently monitored by imaging methods: for example, a high-speed perforation biopsy of soft tissues and bones under the control of computer tomography
