Spare parts can be divided into consumables and repairables. Often, an economic tradeoff exists between ordering a replacement and repairing a failed part. Once the cost of repair is a significant proportion of the cost of a replacement, it becomes more economical to replace the part. This condition is known as "beyond economic repair" (BER). BER rates are associated with certain thresholds for failure rate.
As a result, manufacturing systems that utilize 3D printing have the potential to revolutionize the spare parts industry. Not only will this technology allow for better short-term availability, it will also enable manufacturers to adopt new pricing approaches for their products. Furthermore, it will facilitate overall logistics of the spare parts industry. The technology will be especially strong in production of highly complex geometrical parts. The replacement of a spare part may be costly and slow your business. In these cases, the availability of a replacement is essential to the success of your business. But, a failure to find the right spares for your machine could cause a lengthy shutdown of production.
Aside from their immediate utility, spare parts also help companies save money. In some cases, replacements are less expensive than new ones. However, a single part may cost twice as much as two different types. If your machine is broken, it will take you an hour or more to repair it.
