In the United States, there are over 60,000 gastroenterologists. These doctors are highly qualified to diagnose and treat digestive disorders. The specialty is highly sought after by the general public. Patients can be referred to a gastroenterologist by their personal physician or they can consult a Gastroenterologist themselves. A patient's initial visit will involve a discussion of their overall health. A list of current medications and drug allergies should be brought to the appointment. The doctor will also ask about the patient's current medical condition and will perform a physical examination.
Another important piece of equipment in gastroenterology is the colonoscope, which helps physicians examine gastrointestinal specimens. A colonoscope is a flexible instrument used during endoscopic procedures to visualize the colon. The device also has a sampling device, which allows the doctor to obtain tissue samples from patients. A gastroenterologist's work may include several procedures. For example, a liver biopsy may be necessary to diagnose certain types of cancer in the hepatobiliary system.
The field of gastroenterology is highly dependent on the use of new technologies. A colonoscope is a vital piece of equipment in gastroenterology. It is used to view the GI tract and to screen gastrointestinal tissue. The balloon is used during pyloric, ileocolonic, and esophageal dilatation procedures. A heater probe is used for thermocoagulation in bleeding blood vessels.
Another device used in gastroenterology is the endoscope. This tool has a flexible, inserted portion for visual examination. It is often used to examine the duodenum and oesophagus. It can also be used to visualize the sigmoid colon, a distal S-shaped portion of the large intestine leading to the rectum. It is also sometimes inserted into the stomach to facilitate evacuation.
In addition to endoscopy, a gastroenterologist may also use a catheter. A nasogastric tube is a small, flexible tube used to measure pressure. The device may also measure pH and electrical impedance. A stent is a thin, inflatable tube that is implanted into the duodenum. Once in place, the device can help doctors diagnose and treat various diseases.
A jejunostomy tube is a rigid, inserted endoscope used for feeding and decompression. It is a non-sterile, flexible tube that is inserted through the mouth. Its main purpose is to visualize the entire colon and administer fluids. It can be used to diagnose bleeding per rectum. A rigid sigmoidoscope is used for ERCP. A patient may also need to undergo a gastroscopy after an ERCP.
After completing the residency, gastroenterologists must pass the ABIM Gastroenterology Maintenance of Certification Examination. This examination tests their knowledge of relevant areas of practice. In addition to providing quality care, gastroenterologists perform research in the field. A recent study found that physicians with gastroenterology training perform more accurate colonoscopy examinations than those with less advanced education. Furthermore, they spend less time in the hospital.
