As we have all heard, education and advice go hand in hand. However, the two terms are not always the same. In general, education is the process of imparting knowledge, skill, and judgment to individuals. As we have seen in the recent attacks on schools, the role of advice and education in health care is still controversial. The differences between these two concepts are not limited to their differences in content and approach. This article will discuss the differences between these two approaches and highlight how they can benefit your retirement planning efforts.

In traditional medicine, most people merely studied courses to obtain a degree, not to receive a meaningful job. In the past, a good education was considered more valuable than no education at all. However, the role of advice and education has grown over the years. With the evolution of medicine and dentistry, patients' roles have expanded. Instead of prescribing treatments, conscientious clinicians have now shifted their focus to the process of self-evaluating treatment choices.

Until recently, doctors and dentists have simply prescribed methods that patients must follow. That was the case with traditional medicine and dentistry. Conscientious clinicians provided written instructions or videos on how to use medications, and assumed that their patients understood what they were doing. Now, in a new generation, advice and education have become crucial for achieving good health and wellbeing. A well-rounded education has more than just practical value; it can also contribute to long-term prosperity.

The difference between advice and education is the risk of inappropriate advice. For example, inappropriate advice can involve the provider providing the service not meeting the needs of the individual. In the worst-case scenario, the adviser is merely serving a revenue-generating purpose for the investment advisory firm. In this situation, the company is unaware of the financial goals and concerns of its employees and fails to provide them with an alternative provider. In this scenario, the advice and education may be more appropriate and less expensive than the latter.

Unlike advice, education have a lower liability risk. First-line health professionals can diagnose and treat underlying health issues, while educators can provide simple prevention measures to avoid growth and development abnormalities. Further, a firm can also make false and misleading claims about a particular investment product. In this case, it's best to seek the advice and education of a qualified professional before deciding to invest. For instance, an educational seminar will not have a financial advisor, but it can still be provided by a third-party provider, or an independent firm.

Providing employees with relevant information about the financial benefits of an employer's investment options is an important strategy. Similarly, providing education on investments can help employees make more informed decisions about which investments are suitable for their financial situation. Moreover, it also reduces liability relating to financial benefits. In some cases, a biased advisor can make an employee invest in an investment that doesn't suit their needs. As a result, this advice may be inaccurate and lead to lawsuits.
