Endocrinologists are specialists in the management of diabetes. They treat three major types of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes, as well as other less common conditions. These professionals use tests such as urine analysis, fasting blood glucose level, hemoglobin A1c, oral glucose tolerance test, and non-fasting blood glucose level to diagnose and treat patients with diabetes. In addition, they perform research in this field.

Although endocrinologists are primarily outpatients, some patients may need hospitalization for more complex investigations and complications. Fortunately, only 15% of patients in the United States are admitted to the hospital for endocrine disorders. Many patients with diabetes are chronic and require a multidisciplinary approach. In the United States, more hospitals than ever are managing their patients in partnership with primary care physicians. To increase the quality of care for these patients, specialists in endocrinology and diabetes have become a mainstay of medical care.

In addition to diabetes-related diseases, endocrinologists also investigate and treat disorders of the endocrine system. Their training includes general medical education as well as internships in pediatrics and obstetrics. They then spend another two to three years learning about hormone conditions. To be a successful endocrinologist, one should have extensive knowledge of the endocrine system. The human body has several glands, including the adrenals, pancreas, ovaries, pituitary gland, parathyroid gland, and pancreas. All of these organs produce different hormones that have different effects on specific organs.

The division of endocrinology and diabetes and metabolic disorders is led by Dr. Laura Alonso. Using the latest diagnostic and treatment methods, the endocrinology and metabolic disorder team at the University of Minnesota provides world-class care, advances cutting-edge research, and develops the next generation of physicians. Its faculty is knowledgeable about a wide range of disorders affecting the endocrine system, from thyroid to adrenal glands. Further, it has specialized expertise in male hormone imbalances and gender-affirmative care.

In addition to providing high-quality patient care, the division of endocrinology and metabolic disease is dedicated to cutting-edge research and training. The faculty of this division specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes mellitus, hypogonadia, and hyperglycemia. They are also experts in the areas of acromegaly and female hormones. The faculty at the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism is diverse, with clinical specialties spanning the fields of osteopathic medicine.

The specialty of endocrinology and diabetes is a multidisciplinary field. A physician who specializes in both will treat diabetes and endocrine disorders, as well as help patients manage their condition. As such, the endocrinologist must have a general medical degree, and also a fellowship in the specialty. The residency will be three to five years, and include one year of internship in the hospital.
