EU: New maximum levels for lead and cadmium in food

The European Union has set new binding maximum values for lead and cadmium in food. Both heavy metals pose a health risk to humans and have therefore been reassessed as part of the Europe Against Cancer program.

Regulation (EU) 2021/1317 regulates the maximum values for lead in various foods and has been in force since 08/30/2021. For example, maximum values for wild mushrooms, spices and baby food have been added.

Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 regulates the maximum values for cadmium in certain foods and has been in force since August 31, 2021. Here new maximum values for fruit, vegetables and grain have been regulated and existing ones tightened. For example, the limit value for rice has been reduced from 0.20 mg / kg fresh weight to 0.15 mg / kg fresh weight.

The bilacon laboratory always works with the latest technology and offers you sensitive and rapid analyzes of lead and cadmium in food. During the analysis, a microwave digestion is first carried out in order to break down the organic components and then analyzed using ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry).
