3D printing implants

3D printing implants

The various technologies of additive manufacturing (also called 3D printing) enable medical technology companies to manufacture small series and complex and / or patient-specific implant structures cost-effectively. The focus is on implants and prostheses - in different designs and different areas of application. All the components shown can also be implemented in practice or have been used on or on the patient. The EBM process (electron beam melting) is used for this, in which metal powder is melted in layers in a high vacuum with the aid of an electron beam. This creates a uniform, dense implant layer by layer. Compared to implants used in other parts of the body, hip and spinal implants require dynamic properties and therefore require tougher and less rigid materials.

The great advantage of additive manufacturing is that more complex geometries can be produced easily. Many manufactured geometries simply cannot be implemented as usual. From the mass production of medical implants to the one-off production of customer-specific devices, manufacturers of medical implants are discovering the advantages of 3D metal printing. Additive Manufacturing (AM) enables new designs that were previously not possible. It can create complex features such as ordered and random lattice structures to expand the functions of joint prostheses, spinal implants, and facial implants.

The advantage lies in the fast production through the direct layer-by-layer structure of the data model, the freedom of design for the exact mapping of the complex organic growth structure, the osteoconductive bone substitute material supplemented by the process-related roughness and microstructure, and the stability of the implant and the contact point properties and breaking strength. Additive manufacturing is an innovative production process in which objects are not created in the conventional way by forming, separating or joining processes, but instead builds them up in layers without tools on the basis of 3D data. The otherwise time-consuming and expensive tool manufacture is no longer necessary, so that even individual implants can be manufactured in three to four working days.
