Acetabular reamer

Acetabular reamer

An acetabular reamer is a surgical instrument used to remove bone from the acetabulum before implantation of an acetabular cup. Typical reaming instruments have a convex or hemispherical dome shape with a plurality of holes and raised edges. Reamers may have a handle or be attached to a bracket on the inside or back of the dome.

An acetabular reamer is used to prepare the acetabulum before replacing the liner. The Greatbatch Medical reamer's cross design enables a single handle to fit all reamer sizes and provides an easy, secure grip. The reaming blades are available in a full hemisphere, standard tooth, or MIS version. Several manufacturers offer a variety of reamers for varying bone reaming procedures.

The reamers of the invention are used during joint replacement surgery. The processes involve attaching the reamer to a handle and inserting it into the bone removal site. The reamer is then removed from the reaming site. Once reaming is complete, the reaming tool is used to prepare the femur for insertion of an acetabular prosthetic component.

The cutting edge acetabular reamer aims to ream the acetabulum before insertion of a prosthetic shell. The first reaming reamer should be four millimeters smaller than the shell. Once the reamer is four millimeters smaller, it is used to ream the bone with one-millimeter increments. The surgeon should also use surgical judgment to determine the bone stock and quality, desired level of press fit, and the amount of reaming.

A conventional acetabular reamer has two flat sides and a dome-shaped interior cavity. The cut surface of the femoral neck is cut at the piriformis fossa. The smallest reaming reamer should be placed at a point corresponding to the piriformis fossea. A slightly anterior or lateral insertion point is desired to provide access to the medullary canal.

A reamer with a cross-shaped cross-sectional shape is the preferred embodiment of the present invention. The acetabular reaming device is a hollow, generally hemispherical or modified hemispherical reamer. It is used for preparation of the acetabulum for a replacement lining. Typically, the reamer is used for a single reaming.

The reaming depth is important for a number of reasons. The RC is positioned in a way that prevents the implant from falling. The reaming depth is essential to a patient's survival and the force torque of the reconstructed hip. This measurement can be verified by taking a standard bilateral hip radiograph following a primary THA. This test is important because it helps ensure that the implanted device is placed correctly.

In one embodiment, the acetabular reamer has a fully or hemispherical surface with no cutting teeth. The reaming tool has a hemispherical surface with opposing sides. It has an elongated helix shape and no cutting teeth on the surface of the reaming tool. The reamer can be of any shape and have any number of teeth.
