Clavicle bandages & orthotics

Clavicle braces are braces that are made to support the clavicle, which is located at the base of the neck. They wrap around the upper back in a figure 8 pattern, immobilizing the thoracic clavicle and holding the shoulders back in an upright position. This type of brace has become popular with orthopedic brace retailers because it is an inexpensive solution for a broken clavicle. While they are effective at stabilizing the clavicle, they may not be ideal for posture support.

The clavicle is the second most common fracture site in adults, accounting for four to 10 percent of fractures. The most common mechanism of injury is a direct blow to the shoulder. About 70 percent of clavicle fractures are caused by motor vehicular trauma. The remaining 30% of clavicle fractures are associated with sports injuries. Since the clavicle is much thinner than the rest of the bone, it has less support than other parts of the body. The fracture of the lateral third occurs at a rate of twenty to thirty percent, while the medial third is a relatively rare occurrence.

The clavicle is the third most commonly injured bone in the body. Its role is to act as a support between the chest and shoulder. Fractures of the clavicle are rare, but can be dangerous. The most common cause is a direct blow to the shoulder. Seventy percent of clavicle fractures occur in motor vehicle accidents, while the remaining thirty percent occur in sports and other accidents. Because the middle part of the clavicle is thinner than the rest of the bone, it is more susceptible to injury. Surgical repair of a clavicle may lead to secondary surgery if the fracture is not fully healed.

In case of a clavicle fracture, a 36-year-old male presented with a right-sided displaced mid-shaft clavicle fracture. The patient presented with bruising and ecchymosis near the fracture site, and the patient also reported paresthesia in his right hand that appeared to originate in the posterior radial nerve distribution. He underwent a reduction and internal fixation of the fracture and was placed on a contoured 3.5 mm pelvic reconstruction plate. He continues to return for regular follow-up appointments and has no recurrent problems with the fracture or the use of a clavicle orthotic.

After a clavicle fracture, the patient will need follow-up care for several weeks. After treatment, x-rays may be needed to ensure the bone is healing in the proper position. Patients can gradually return to normal activities after a clavicle fracture by using a sling. During the initial recovery period, patients may start doing exercises that strengthen the shoulder and prevent stiffness and weakness.
