A colposcope is a small optical instrument that is used to examine the vagina and cervix. These instruments are used in the diagnosis of various health conditions, including cervical dysplasia and human papillomavirus infections. The technology allows the physician to select the best location for a biopsy. It has binocular magnifying optics and can take pictures of the area being examined. Modern colposcopes come with digital video and still photography equipment, allowing a surgeon to take a picture of the area being examined.
Most colposcopes have a fixed focal distance of 250 to 300 mm, although some may be variable. These devices also have a changing power of the objective lenses, allowing the clinician to adjust the magnification and working distance. Some types are portable, making them more suitable for clinics in developing nations. Some even feature a monocular teaching side tube and a CCD video camera. However, if the patient's doctor doesn't have access to a computer, the colposcope may be an alternative to a standard exam.
A colposcope should be set to the lowest possible magnification. It should be able to visualize the entire TZ, 360 degrees of normal squamous and columnar epithelium, and a complete lesion. The lesion must be visible throughout the whole TZ. If it extends up the canal, it cannot be seen, so the eyepiece should be properly adjusted. Using a colposcope with an adjustable magnification is a crucial part of the examination process, and the doctor should always use a standard lens to avoid eye strain.
