Elbow prostheses

Two main types of elbow prostheses are available. The unlinked and linked versions are hinged devices, but the former is more stable than the latter. An unlinked implant relies on surrounding ligaments to hold the joint together. This type of prosthesis requires physical therapy for its best results. The attached version of an elbow prosthesis has a limited range of motion. It is also associated with significant pain and discomfort. However, the unlinked version is more expensive.

The Discovery Elbow System is produced by Biomet in Warsaw, IN. It is made of titanium and CoCrMo alloys, and is cemented to the elbow bone. This prosthesis also has an adjustable length and width. Regardless of which type you choose, you will be happy with the results. There are no drawbacks to this type of elbow prosthesis. You can expect it to last for years.

The Zimmer GSB III Elbow Prosthesis is a great choice for most patients. It is made of titanium and is cemented into the bone. It is also flexible, so the patient can change the prosthesis at any time during the procedure. The attached part of the elbow is cemented and can be adjusted to provide more comfort and stability. A single-piece design has the advantage of being removable. It also provides a better range of options.

In addition to using different materials and designs, elbow prostheses can be used for the treatment of multiple injuries. Unlike the radial arm, a transradial arm can move independently. A limb powered prosthetic uses a harness tied to the opposite shoulder. A cable-operated model connects to a harness. A myoelectric arm detects movements in the upper arm and opens or closes a prosthetic hand.

The EVOLVE prosthesis was evaluated in a study by Moghaddam and colleagues. It restores ROM and stability in patients with post-traumatic arthritis. This prosthesis has a high rate of patient satisfaction, but it is not without risks. In the study, the EVOLVE prosthesis was compared to other elbow prostheses for the same condition. There were a total of 85 patients treated with the EVOLVE prosthesis. Of those, 75 had follow-up appointments.

The Coonrad/Morrey total elbow prosthesis is a molded plastic and metal joint. The humeral component is made of Tivanium Ti-6Al-4V alloy, which is a conductive alloy. The ulnar component is a coiled titanium wire. Its length can vary to compensate for the wearer's needs. Its durability and ease of use are its main advantages.

The Kudo 5 elbow prosthesis is a titanium alloy device with a polyethylene layer for smoother, articulating surfaces. The radial head component can be manipulated in the same way as the ulnar stem. The radial stem component is unlinked and constrained. The two parts of the Latitude Elbow articulate with a polyethylene layer. The humeral stem has lateral and medial fins that articulate with the trochlea. The ulnar spools have a subtle anterior fin.
