Extension systems

Extension systems

The Elbow Extension Dynasplint is a type of orthopedic splint that extends from the MCP joint on the elbow to the proximal one-third of the forearm. The extension extends past the MCP joint to the third MCP joint on the radial side of the forearm. It is designed to limit pronation and supination of the forearm.

The main goal of using a splint is to immobilize a broken bone until it is able to heal. This technique is effective in reducing pain while protecting the blood vessels and nerves. Unsplinted limbs are more likely to develop complications such as bleeding, which requires further treatment. Therefore, it is imperative to properly immobilize a fractured limb. A well-made, custom-fitted splint is an essential piece of equipment for a patient's rehabilitation.

There are several types of splints. A collar and cuff splint covers the radial aspect of the forearm and the distal portion of the thumb. This type of splint is used when there is a suspected distal fracture. It extends 2 inches proximal to the fibular head. A collar and cuff sling is the most common type of splint. The two different types of splints have their own advantages and disadvantages.

The wrist splint extends from the mid-forearm to the distal palmar crease. It is used for nondisplaced and minimally displaced distal wrist fractures. It also is used for carpal bone fractures other than scaphoid. This type of splint is breathable and helps reduce pain. There are two types of this splint: the Cramer wire splint and the radial splint.

A wrist splint extends from the mid-forearm to the distal palmar crease. It is used for nondisplaced or minimally displaced fractures of the distal carpal bone. It should extend past the knee for absolute immobility. A wrist splint is usually attached to a hand, but it is not rigid. A flexible metallic splint is an option if it is difficult to apply.

The anterior splint, or posterior splint, is more rigid. The posterior splint, or extension splint, is designed to prevent bone dislocation, while the anterior splint is thin and provides minimal support. It does not offer structural support. In a traumatic distal forearm fracture, the elbow is held in a 90-degree angle. When a splint is applied to the wrist, the dorsal splint extends just proximal MCP joints.

The ulnar gutter splint is used to immobilize the forearm. It extends from the deltoid insertion to the proximal interphalangeal joint. It is a padded splint with a wide opening between the fingers and the arm. The elbow and forearm are held in a slight flexion, with the splint extending outward to the radial crease of the hand.
