Fittings - connections

Fittings connections play an important role in ensuring that a system works correctly. The proper connection between the pipe and fitting should be strong and leak-tight. To ensure this, you can buy a variety of fittings and make a choice based on the materials used. Some common fittings are listed below. Depending on your needs, you can even choose between a number of different types. Here are some of the most common types.

Luer fittings: These fittings are named after their inventor, Hermann Luer. These sleeve-shaped connections are designed for leak-free connection and continuous lumen for fluid flow. When pressed together, these fittings form a cone with a 6% taper. Although the Luer connection is most commonly used for vascular access, it has also been used for pneumatic and enteral connections.

Luer connections: Luer fittings are named for their inventor, Hermann Ludwig Luer. They are designed for leak-free connections and a continuous lumen for fluid flow. These fittings are cone-shaped and have a 6-percent taper. The Luer connection is most commonly used in vascular applications, but has also been used in enteral and pneumatic applications. These connections are typically leak-free and are usually made of polyethylene tubing.

Flange fittings: These fittings are often used for inline instruments, valves, and equipment nozzles. Their two surfaces fit tightly together with high compressive force. They may be sealed with an O-ring or gasket to avoid leaks. Special grease can be used as a seal in flange fittings as long as the mating surfaces are sufficiently accurately formed. This type of connection is suitable for demanding applications.

SAE J512 inverted connections: These connections are typically used in automotive systems. The male connector is a 45-degree flare within the tube fitting or a 42-degree inverted flare in a machined adapter. The female connector incorporates a straight thread with an inverted flare. This combination provides a secure mechanical connection. The female connector is a 42-degree inverted flare. These connectors are welded to the fittings, so that they cannot come loose.

A common type of connection in a fluid power system is the ISO/DIS 6162 four-bolt flange. It is available in two different pressure ratings: standard and high-pressure. The code 6162-M4 fittings are the most common metric-button-like connectors. A three-way Luer stopcock is a popular choice for a universal tube. The female port of the ISO/DIS 6162-M4 is threaded for a tight connection.

Nipples: Nipples are short pieces of pipe that are male-threaded. These connect two fittings. Typically, they have two different diameters. One type is sized to match the pipe size and the other is larger. Using a nipple in a piping system will allow you to connect a number of different pipes to it. Regardless of the material used, these are a common choice for plumbing.
