Impression material

Impression material

There are a few different types of dental impression materials, each of which is designed for a specific use. An impression is a negative imprint of the tissues of the mouth, which will later be used to create a positive reproduction. Generally, the process involves placing the appropriate material into a special tray which fits over the arch of the teeth. Alternatively, a dentist may choose to use a more traditional model of the mouth.

Polysulfide impressions were one of the first elastomers to be introduced. However, they are not as forgiving as other impression materials. They also require immediate pouring, and should only be used for complete dentures. Condensed silicone impressions are less expensive and have a shorter lifespan than other materials. But they are prone to shrinkage, and are not recommended for all patients. This is why it is important to choose the most appropriate type of material for your patient.

The first elastomeric impression material introduced is polysulfide. Although inexpensive and easier to manipulate, it is not recommended for complete dentures. Condensed silicone impression materials are more expensive but require immediate pouring. These are ideal for temporary fillings or a temporary restoration. Fortunately, most of these materials are FDA approved and safe to use in dental practices. This is why there are so many types of dental impression material to choose from.

Another type of impression material is aginate. This material has a higher dimensional stability and is often considered the best option for temporary or complete dentures. Unlike polysulfide, agarose is more porous and can absorb water. Since this type of material is hydrophilic, it is best for impressions of soft tissues. Unfortunately, it is not suitable for dentures due to its limited retraction and low dimensional stability.

Plastic impression materials are the most common type of dental impression material. These materials are made to be durable and are a great choice for a variety of situations. Whether you are a general dentist or a cosmetic dentist, impression materials are a very important tool. It is a necessary step to ensure a successful result and make your patients happy. If you have a problem, a professional can recommend the right dental impression material for you.

Several types of impression materials are available for use in the dental lab. Generally, the three most common types of impression material are acetate, acrylic, and polysulfides. In contrast to polysulfide, acrylics can be both flexible and rigid. These materials are most suitable for dentures that need to be removable. In some cases, they may not be used for full dentures. They are best used in circumstances where accuracy is less important.
