Intraoperative radiation systems

Intraoperative radiation systems

Radiation therapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses high-dose radioactive sources to destroy cancer cells. It is done through a small tube called a catheter. The radiation may be delivered within a few days or weeks of the initial procedure. Some treatments may require multiple treatments, and it is important to understand the risks and side effects before beginning treatment. Aside from cancer, radiation may also affect healthy tissue nearby. In some cases, side effects may result from the treatment.

Treatment is performed with a camera and closed-circuit television monitor. During treatment, the radiation therapist will observe the patient with a microphone. The therapist will move the table and machine during the treatment. The machine will make many noises, so it's important to keep the television and microphone off the patient. The radiation therapist will tell the patient if anything is uncomfortable or if they need to move it. During the procedure, the therapist will monitor the treatments and make sure that they are comfortable for the patient.

After completing a treatment, the radiation therapist will leave the room and monitor the patient through a closed-circuit television camera. While in the treatment room, the radiation therapist will remain visible and hear the patient. If the patient feels uncomfortable, they can stop the treatment. The machine will move and may move the table. It is important to report any problems to the radiation therapist so they can make the treatment comfortable for the patient.

A person can undergo radiation therapy if they are experiencing cancer. A treatment session is usually performed once a week and lasts between 30 minutes and an hour. Patients will typically be sedated for the entire session. While undergoing the procedure, patients are required to stay seated or lie completely still. Their shoes are usually not worn during radiation treatment. They may also need to change into a hospital gown to receive treatment. The treatment session will last anywhere from one to two days.

After a doctor has determined the proper treatment method, a radiation therapist will bring the patient to a treatment room. The therapist will help the patient lie down on the table and close the door. After the therapist leaves the room, the radiation will start. The radiation will be absorbed by the body. The treatment may take between 15 and 45 minutes. The patient will not experience any pain during this time. The treatment may be painful or uncomfortable, but it will be temporary.

External radiation is another type of cancer treatment that uses a machine to direct high-energy rays into the tumor. It is administered during outpatient visits at a treatment center or hospital. It can be given daily or twice per day. Since the patient will not be radioactive, no special safety precautions are necessary. It is essential to follow all instructions carefully and be open to new ideas. Your doctor will provide you with a radiation therapy schedule.
