Lower leg splints

Lower leg splints

The design of a lower leg splint depends on the specific injury. For example, if a patient has a fractured ankle, a 4-inch splint is usually appropriate. A splint that is narrower will lose its contouring ability and won't cover enough surface area. The splint is positioned circumferentially around the extremity, with each layer of padding overlapping the previous one by 50% or more.

A lower leg splint's design is often similar to a shoe or a brace. The lower leg splint is a rigid cast, but there are also removable splints available. They are designed to be easy to apply and remove. Some splints are made of two layers, and one is made of rigid PVC. These splints are more prone to rotating than others, and require two points of contact to be applied.

A foot splint is typically made of heavy-duty reinforced PVC, with a foam lining. The splint is designed to protect the nerves and flexor tendons in the lower leg. The lower leg splint is constructed of two subassemblies: a rigid PVC splint and a foam pad. The foot pad is attached to the posterior slab of the leg splint.

Splints may be static or dynamic. The splint should fit the leg and be comfortable for the patient. It should prevent excessive movement of the ankle. If the patient is prone to clotting, a splint should be removable to maintain a neutral knee position. The splint should be placed with the injured toe in an angle of 90 degrees and the foot should be supported with a splint support.

The splint is applied to the foot and ankle. Its application is simple and painless. The splint must be securely attached to the leg. If the splint is placed on the knee, it should be secure. The splint should be in the supine position. It must be at the correct angle so that the patient can walk freely. This is essential to prevent excessive movement of the knee.

Usually, the splint is applied to the injured leg and ankle. Ankle injuries must be reduced and plastered prior to application of the splint. The stirrup should be rolled over the uninjured leg. The material should stop several centimeters below the knee crease. It is best to cut the padding material into strips for a proper fit. If the patient is already splinted, the splint should not be applied on the uninjured leg.

A long leg splint is usually placed in a neutral position and is often paired with an emergency room stethoscope to provide an accurate diagnosis. In severe cases, the fractured leg will need to be immobilized for a few days to heal. The splint is not recommended for patients who have a history of pricking or traumatic brain injuries. It may worsen the condition.
