Lumbar spine arthrodesis plates

Lumbar spine arthrodesis plates are implants used to repair the vertebrae of the lower lumbar spine. These are often used for degenerative disc conditions and herniated discs. They are also effective in Grade I and II spondylolistheses. They are widely used in patients with radiculopathy, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis.

Alumbar spine arthrodesis uses a plate or instruments to fuse two bones into one. Some surgeons prefer to fuse all disc levels that appear bad. However, this is not a good idea since most patients have a single herniated disc. This will add more strain to the unfused segments. Other physicians recommend fusing only pathological levels to maintain the patient's neck motion and biomechanics.

Another option for a fusion is an allograft. In this procedure, cadaver bone is used. This is usually obtained from a bone bank. In some cases, a cadaver's bone is taken from another part of the body and inserted into the spinal canal. The bone may contain proteins that promote bone healing. A new type of bone graft is a synthetic bone forming protein called a BMP. It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in the spine.

Another option is to use bone graft. Bone grafts may be harvested from the patient during the primary surgical procedure or from a deceased person. A bone morphogenetic protein may be used in a lumbar spine arthrodesis surgery. The BMP will stimulate the formation of new bone. This treatment can be effective in treating many spinal disorders, including those caused by spinal instability.

Alumbar spine arthrodesis plates are made of plastic and metal. They are commercially available and have minimal risks. They are used in both single and multilevel procedures. There are two types of these plates. The one level version is the L4-L5 spinal fusion and the other level is a L4-L5 fusion. The two-level version is a combination of three vertebrae.

Both procedures are successful in treating lumbar spine disorders. Unlike the anterior cervical arthrodesis, a lumbar spinal fusion uses bone grafts from other parts of the body. The grafted bone is attached between adjacent vertebrae using screws. The screws may be used in a posterior lumbar spinal fusion. A posterior lumbar fusion may also help with tumors, spondylolisthesis, and spinal infections.

The procedure usually involves an incision on the patient's waist. The doctor removes the damaged disc from the spine. The bone graft is placed in the gap between vertebrae to provide stability and height. The graft is then placed between the vertebrae to promote fusion. The surgeon may attach a plate or screws to the graft. Once the grafted bone has healed, it is likely to fuse.
