The three-dimensional imaging capability of an MRI system is achieved through the use of gradient coils. The high-resolution magnets have a low SNR, which limits their spatial resolution. The spectral information contained within each voxel can provide detailed data on many different metabolites. The quality of these images depends on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the MR systems.

The global MRI market is fragmented into several segments based on their strength and capacity. Some MRI systems have multiple transmit/receive coils to optimize for the various areas of the body. In addition to maximizing the spatial information associated with a particular coil location, a multicoil system can improve image acquisition time and speed. The versatility of MRI equipment also increases its potential for a large number of applications.

The sound produced by MRI machines is immense, and the noise is created by a large, rotating magnet. The sound evoked by the MRI machine is similar to a hammering sound. Its main magnetic field creates a stronger gradient. Moreover, the noise can be drowned out by listening to music, or by wearing earplugs. The only thing that can be heard during the MRI process is the main magnetic field of the MRI scanner.

MRI systems are classified as Class II medical devices. They are radiation-emitting electronic products and are subject to the regulations of the FDA in the United States and Canada. Their manufacturers must comply with federal and state regulations. As a result, MRI systems are subject to a variety of compliance requirements. Some of the most common requirements relate to the quality and safety of MRI equipment. These standards include: “general performance standards" and "indicated radiation exposure.
