Operating theaters & wings

The term "operating theater" dates back to medieval times. The first surgical theatres had stepped benches surrounding a table and balconies above the patient. Surgeons plied their trade in private, and before one hundred years ago, they started performing surgeries in sterile, regulated settings. Today, operating theaters are the main facility in a hospital where surgical procedures are performed. The surgeon, anesthesiologist, and anesthesiology resident work side by side with each other in the room.

Infections are a common concern in surgical interventions. Patients with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to infections. In addition, air is considered to be a vector for pathogens and is one of the leading causes of surgical site infections. These infections are associated with increased morbidity, longer hospital stays, and higher costs for communities. Infections in the operating field can occur in several ways, including human contamination, direct contact with instruments, and indirect contact with components of the operating theater. Various factors, including air quality, behavior of the medical team, ventilation system, and the health of the patient, play an important role in determining whether the surgical environment is sterile.

A large number of sterile medical materials are used in operating rooms. Surgical equipments are implanted and evaluated by notified bodies in every EU Member State. CE markings are assigned when they meet safety and efficacy standards. In addition to sterile surgical instruments, hospitals have various systems to evaluate post-marketing safety and efficacy of drugs and devices. Off-label use is common, especially in low-prevalence diseases.

The first stage in modernizing an operating theaters was to increase their efficiency. The advent of day surgery and outpatient procedures may render the standard operating theater redundant. But with the emergence of endosurgery and robotic surgeries, an entirely new concept in the field of surgery is emerging. And with a growing number of patients needing surgery, it will be easier than ever to provide a safe and efficient environment for surgery. So, how do we make our surgical environment as smart and efficient as possible?

The ventilation system plays a key role in controlling airborne contamination. The proper ventilation system helps to keep the air sterile environment as clean as possible. A clean operating theater will be equipped with modern technology to ensure patient safety. However, it may be a long time before the standard surgical knife is replaced. But for now, there are some things to consider when designing an operating theater. It is important to keep a safe room.

The airflow rate and velocity of an operating theater are typically measured under "at-rest" conditions. In-patient sterility is determined by the amount of blood circulating in the room, which is the main purpose of the ventilation system. This can affect patient safety. If the air quality is too high, it can lead to a hospitalization. Consequently, a clean operating theater can prevent bloodstream infection. Its ventilation system is essential for ensuring patient safety.
