Planning systems (radiation systems)

Planning systems (radiation systems)

Before beginning radiation treatment, physicians should plan the exact dosage and sequence of the treatments. This involves creating virtual simulations and delineating critical organs. Then, they can determine the most appropriate radiation directions and body positions for each patient. In a perfect scenario, the radiation dose delivered will not harm any critical organs. However, in reality, there are many more factors to consider. A patient should be prepared for the entire treatment process.

The first step in planning radiation therapy is determining the dose. A doctor will first determine the target of the radiation therapy, then develop a treatment plan to deliver the prescribed dose. The radiation beam portals must be placed in an optimal way for the patient. Then, the medical team will consult with the medical physicist and radiation oncologist to evaluate the plan and make any necessary adjustments. Then, a computer-based radiation treatment planning system will calculate the total dose, as well as the distribution of the treatment.

Once the radiation treatment plan is finalized, it is time to make the treatment. During this process, x-ray films of the patient's body are taken to determine the radiation angles. After this, a CT or MRI scan is used to calculate the dose. Tiny permanent markings are then placed on the body parts that will be treated. These marks are then used to ensure that daily treatments are delivered properly. They can also be used for future treatment planning sessions and updates.

Before the treatment, a patient must sign a consent form. Depending on the treatment site, a woman cannot undergo radiation therapy if she is pregnant. The radiation may cause harm to the unborn child. To protect the unborn child, patients are told whether they should remove their clothes before the procedure or not. If they must, they will be covered as much as possible. If they cannot, the staff will cover them as much as possible.

The next step of the treatment process is preparing for the treatments. The patient will be placed in a specific position. A radiographer will use an immobilization device to maintain the patient's position during the procedure. A small mark will be placed on the face in order to protect the baby from the radiation. The radiation will affect the breasts, abdomen, lungs, and neck. The treatment will be completed after the patient's body has undergone physical and mental preparation.

Imaging systems are essential in the planning process. To ensure the quality of the radiation treatment, images should have uniform pixel sizes and be as high-contrast as possible. The high contrast in the images will help identify the boundaries of the organs and aid in the calculation of the radiation dose. Moreover, the images should be flexible and allow the user to customize the layout of the images. These computer systems should be compatible with different imaging equipment.
