Polysomnography Systems

There are two types of polysomnography systems. One is used for a sleep study and the other is used to determine whether a sleep disorder is present. The two tests can be done at home or in a hospital. Each one is similar. In either case, a technician will use a video camera, audio system, and computer to record the patient's brain waves. However, a home system is preferred for privacy reasons, since it is much cheaper.

Polysomnography systems are used to determine whether a patient is experiencing sleep apnea. These studies help physicians diagnose a patient's condition and recommend a treatment plan. A sleep apnea machine is a device that helps a person breathe easier while they sleep. It consists of a nosepiece that seals tightly and provides a gentle stream of air. Another type of sleep apnea machine is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).

Pediatric polysomnography requires extended lab hours and a 1:1 technologist-patient ratio. A child's sleep needs are different from adults'. A child requires ten hours of sleep during the day, so a 1:1 technologist-to-patient ratio is needed. Some laboratories have begun using swing shifts in the evenings. When a child is involved in a polysomnogram, he or she should be allowed to sit on a parent's lap. During the setup, a technician and parent should partner with one another. The technician and child should engage in the activity and engage in the conversation. The technician should be sure to assign roles for the child, such as a child's role, and encourage age-appropriate coping mechanisms.

The most common types of polysomnography are type I and type II. The former is continuous monitoring that records the biophysiological changes that occur while a person sleeps.
