There are many different types of prosthetic sockets. They range from mass-produced pieces to custom-made ones that are molded directly to the patient's limb. The two main types of sockets are prefabricated and modular, and both are used by prosthetic practitioners. Modular sockets are prefabricated components that are firmly attached to an adjustable base. Custom-hybrid sockets combine elements of both types of sockets. These can be made of plastic, carbon, or silicone materials.

The most common type of prosthetic socket is the single-piece design. These sockets are used to provide a symmetrical look. They can also be custom-made to fit different-sized limbs. These types of sockets come in a variety of sizes. The size is determined by the prosthetic clinic's size, and the shape must conform to the residual limb's curvature. Typically, the larger the socket, the bigger it needs to be. These require compression socks and are harder to put on and take off.

The materials used for sockets are made of plastic, plastics, and silicone. The first material that was used for these sockets was silicone. In the early days, this material was very difficult to work with and had many side effects. Eventually, polyethylene and nylon were used, but they were hard to work with and were prone to breakage. Finally, the thermoplastic material made the process easier. These types of materials are now widely used in prosthetics.

Currently, there are many different types of prosthetic sockets. The type of prosthetic socket depends on the patient's needs and the prosthetic surgeon's preference. Asymmetrically-shaped socket with a small amount of space in between will provide optimal support for a limb. The same is true of nonsymmetrical sockets. However, they will fit perfectly on the leg. This makes them ideal for people who have asymmetrical limbs.

There are many types of sockets available. All of them have advantages and disadvantages. The best one is the one that is suitable for the patient's unique condition. It will fit the patient's limb well. The size of the sockets should be proportional to the patient's height and weight. It should be shaped so that it fits properly on the leg. Sockets with adjustable ends can be more comfortable.

The overall comfort of the sockets is an essential consideration. A poorly fitting prosthesis can cause skin breakdown and decrease activity. A poorly-fitting socket can result in decreased limb wear and decreased activity. Additionally, excessive torque can lead to gait deviations. It can also cause skin to break, leading to increased risk of skin breakdown. The use of soft pads can also facilitate venous and lymphatic return of blood. A soft-padded prosthesis can also aid in the return of limb fluids. It may, however, be less hygienic due to the absorption of moisture and bacteria.

A prosthetic socket for upper-limb amputees usually consists of a liner and a weight-bearing outer wall. The liner protects the skin inside the socket and minimizes friction between the socket and the residual limb. An improperly-fitting sockets can lead to pain and reduced ability to use the prosthesis. In such cases, a proper fitting socket will ensure comfort for the amputee.
