Retaining bracket

Retaining bracket

Retaining bracket patients are not as well-known as fixed lingual retainers. They are small devices that fit over the lower front teeth and stabilize the teeth after they've been aligned. Patients should keep these appliances in place for at least two years after their braces are removed. However, some patients tend to lose their retainers accidentally or while eating out. Broken retainers can delay orthodontic treatment, and some orthodontic practices may charge you extra if you don't promptly visit the orthodontist.

Patients typically have poor oral hygiene habits, and they may not brush and floss their teeth as often as they should. Fixed retainers require stricter oral hygiene and should not be worn by patients with severe medical conditions. Fortunately, lingual bonded retainers are easy to remove and are usually worn for a year or two. Retaining bracket patients should continue to visit their orthodontist every three to six months for monitoring.

Fixed retainers require the same dental hygiene routine as lingual retainers. This includes using a daily flossing regimen. The patient must also keep their teeth clean to prevent plaque and bacteremia. Additionally, patients with poor diets should avoid bonded lingual retainers. These appliances are not appropriate for people with severe medical problems. In addition, bonded lingual retainers can be dangerous for patients with poor oral hygiene.

While there are several drawbacks to retaining brackets, the benefits outweigh the downsides. Most bonded retainers can be manufactured in just one day. This can save valuable chair time. Moreover, a bonded retainer can be fitted in two minutes by a chairside assistant, while a non-bonded one takes just a few minutes to seat. The patient can then continue eating soft foods while their back teeth come together.

The wires used in bonded retainers are incredibly stiff. It is best to use a removable retainer if the patient wants to avoid it altogether. But, if it's too difficult to remove a retainer, a fixed retainer is an option. In addition to being flexible, a bonded retainer will not interfere with sports, speech, or musical instruments. It will not affect the appearance of a patient.

Retaining bracket patients should replace their retainers at regular intervals to ensure the success of their orthodontic treatment. They must also keep their retainers in their protective cases when they are not in their mouth. This will prevent further movement of teeth and delay of treatment time. If you are planning to participate in heavy contact sports, make sure your back teeth are not touching at all. This can cause damage to the braces and lead to a need for a new retainer.

Retaining bracket patients should be aware of the risks of self-ligating brackets. Retaining brackets are more likely to break than metal braces. This can lead to damage to the brackets and tooth. If you choose to self-ligate, you'll have to visit the orthodontist more often. You may need to make more than one appointment to ensure the success of your treatment.
