A sinuscopy can be performed under local or general anesthesia. An endoscope, a narrow, optical device, is used for the examination. This is inserted into the maxillary sinus through a nasal passage and the connecting passage. In certain cases, the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus is finely drilled from the oral vestibule. Now the mucous membrane in the maxillary sinus can be examined. Samples are taken from the mucous membrane for further histology. Furthermore, small growths or changes in the mucous membrane such as a polyp or a cyst can be removed during this treatment. After the procedure, nasal packs are inserted to catch blood and wound exudate.
Sinusoscopy is the reflection of the maxillary sinus with the help of an endoscope. In this way, a maxillary sinus disease can be diagnosed and treated. The maxillary sinus (Latin maxillary sinus) is one of the paranasal sinuses and roughly corresponds to the shape of a triangular pyramid. The maxillary sinus consists of an air-filled cavity (vaporization cavity) in the bone, which is lined with a mucous membrane approximately 1 mm thick. The mucous membrane ensures that the maxillary sinus cleans itself by removing fluid and mucus from the maxillary sinus. The volume of the maxillary sinus after growth is approximately 12 to 15 milliliters and is located on the left and right sides of the nose, next to the eye socket and lower upper teeth. The maxillary sinus is connected to the nasal cavity through a small opening and is ventilated through this opening.
