Storage of corpses
Since mid-April, the bodies of New Yorkers have been arriving at a morgue for processing. After being zipped up in black body bags and logged into a computer tracking system, the bodies are pushed up a ramp to the loading dock where they are placed on wooden racks. The corpses are then stacked with ninety other corpses in 53-foot refrigerated tractor trailers. The temperature inside the trailers is kept at 37-to-39 degrees Fahrenheit.
The cold storage facility used for preserving the corpses must maintain a temperature of 34-37o F. If stored at higher temperatures, the corpses will begin to decompose. For long-term storage, it is recommended that a morgue be established at an optimum temperature. If the temperature is too low, the corpses will rot. A more expensive method is to store the corpses in a mortuary freezer.
While storing corpses is considered a delicate procedure, it is important to follow the guidelines for preserving human remains properly. While a body should be autopsied as soon as possible, it should be kept in a cold storage facility.
