A suprapubic urinary catheter is a small plastic tube that is inserted into the bladder and drains urine outside the body. These catheters are typically long-term devices, so returning to normal urination may not be possible. However, there are some benefits to these devices. A suprapubic urinary drainage catheter is less likely to cause CA-bacteria, since the abdominal skin is less susceptible to urethral colonization. Another benefit is that a patient may not experience as many complications compared to a straight urethral drainage catheter. The downside of this device is that it can interfere with sexual activities and can be difficult to remove.
A suprapubic catheter can be less invasive than a urethral catheter, because it's located farther away from the genitals. Emlyn had one after undergoing prostate cancer surgery. A suprapubic catheter is a flexible tubular device that's placed through the abdominal wall to enter the urinary bladder. It's attached to a bag, similar to a colostomy bag. Often, patients will have their catheters in place for a prolonged period of time. A trocar will be used to insert a suprapubic cannula. A colostomy bag is also used to secure the device.
Suprapubic catheters are a relatively rare type of intra-rectal catheter. The use of this device is most common when a patient's urethra becomes severely blocked. The urethra is the passageway from the bladder to the outside body. Using a suprapubic catheter helps the patient pass urine through the urethra. This procedure is also known as urethral catheterisation. Although similar to a URETHRAL catheter, a suprapubic urinary tube is inserted through the urethra.
There are various options for suprapubic catheters. Most catheters are 5 inches in length (25cm), but some are longer than that. The length of the catheter will depend on the patient's needs. The most common type of female suprapubic urinary catheters are 6 inches in length (20-26cm) and thirteen to sixteen inches in length (40-45cm). It should be easy to apply.
Unlike urethral catheters, suprapubic catheters are often not painful and can last for years. The catheter is not necessary to stay in place for long, and the patient can easily replace it at home. The replacement catheter should be a similar size and not larger than the original one. Once the original catheter is removed, it should be inflated with sterile saline. If the patient is having trouble with the urinary system, the nurse can change the suction bag or connect the syringe to the leg drainage bag.
