Ureteral stents
Ureteral stents are small tubes that allow urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder. Typically, the stents are placed in the urethra, the tube that leaves the body when you pee. During this procedure, a urologist inserts a small scope that has a lens into the urethra. A thin, flexible wire is threaded into the obstructed duct using this lens.
The stent stays in place for six to eight weeks, depending on the patient's circumstances. The ureteral stent must be removed a few weeks after the procedure. The removal procedure will involve using a special device called a cystoscope, which is similar to a bladder catheter. The stent can be removed within a few minutes. The patient will be instructed on how to care for the stent following the surgery.
The patient should call the physician's office to schedule a follow-up appointment, usually 3 to 14 days after the surgery. The stent will likely be removed at this visit. Prior to the follow-up appointment, the physician will need to perform a chest x-ray. Patients should not return to the same doctor twice. During the first appointment, the stent will be removed, and the physician will need to perform a follow-up procedure.
Some patients may have a painful procedure after the stent is placed. However, the majority of urethral stents don't interfere with the patient's ability to perform their daily activities. Many people also experience a small amount of blood in their urine after strenuous activity. The stent doesn't affect a patient's ability to perform everyday activities. A thin string is attached to the stent. When the stent is no longer needed, the patient will use the string to remove it.
When you have a urethral stent, you may experience pain when you urinate, but this will go away soon. You may notice a small amount of blood in your urine after performing strenuous activities. The stent is very small, and you can perform all of your daily activities as usual. The stent is not a big inconvenience and can be removed without surgery. A stent is attached to the urethra by a thin string.
As with any stent, there are different types of stents that are available. The gold standard ureteral stent is made from polymeric compounds. The stents used in this procedure are made of silicone, but can also be made of other materials. For instance, a stent that is made of titanium is considered a high-end ureteral stent.
After the ureteral stents have been inserted into the ureter, they are temporary. They are typically removed after a few weeks. The stent can be removed at your doctor's office visit, or you can have the stent removed at a later time. Once your child is healed, you will have to take care of the stent for at least two weeks.
