Viscometer

Viscometer

A Viscometer is a device that measures the resistance of fluid to flow in two basic ways, kinematic and absolute. The kinematic viscosity is measured as the resistance of the fluid to flow under gravity while the absolute viscosity is measured as the resistance to flow under a controlled force. The two types of viscosity are often compared using the Couette and Searle systems. The kinematic viscosometer measures the fluid's resistance to flow under a controlled force. In absolute and kinematic viscosity, the amount of force required to make the material move is the constant, and the fluid's resistance to flow is measured in centipoise (cP). The test takes a stationary object and measures the kinematic and absolute pressures that the material exerts on it.

The kinetic viscometer is another option for determining the viscosity of liquids. This tool measures the flow rate of a liquid through a mechanical mechanism that uses an electromagnetic field to spin a sphere. The rotor is powered by two magnets and is connected to the sample. The sample is placed in a test tube and is contained in an aluminium sphere. The test tube is then set in a temperature-controlled chamber and the sphere sits at the center of two magnets.

A Capillary Viscometer is a type of Viscometer. The test liquid must flow through a capillary with a known diameter and between two marked points. This time is then multiplied by a factor called the kinematic viscosity. Most viscometers are placed in a water bath to maintain a constant temperature, but the exact temperature can vary. This can make a viscosity measurement difficult.

A Norcross viscometer, named after its inventor Austin Norcross, is a simple but effective method of measuring the viscosity of a fluid. It consists of a U-shaped glass tube with a vertical section that is narrow. The upper bulb is followed by a lower one. The fluid is drawn into the upper bulb by suction and flows through the capillary. Once a liquid is known to be thixotropic, two marks appear on the U-shaped tube to indicate its volume.

When assessing fluid viscosity, a viscometer uses multiple measurements. The accuracy of the viscometer is essential to ensure that measurements are accurate. A viscometer's accuracy can be verified with the use of a standard. The Brookfield Silicone and Mineral Oil Standards are useful in most applications, since they provide a constant fluid viscosity at 25 degrees Celsius. In addition to these, the viscosity of the material must also be monitored at different temperatures.

The cup and bob viscometers work by defining the sample volume. These two types of viscometers differ in the way they apply their Taylor's law to the measurements. They differ in the way that they use their sample and are also widely available. In a rotary viscometer, the sample volume is fixed while the kinematic viscosity is determined by the size. In the rotary viscometer, the sample is rotated and measured at the same speed.
