X-ray protective sheets

Xray protection sheets are used in medical facilities for radiation shielding. These sheets are made from lead and are placed on a patient's back and front for optimal radiation protection. The primary beam of the x-ray machine is aligned with the collimator light field. The apron is typically positioned behind the patient's torso. The apron prevents the radiation from entering the body, and it also blocks backscatter from structures close by.

The effectiveness of biological shields is inversely proportional to the material's cross-section for absorption and scattering. The shielding strength is traditionally measured in g/cm2 and is often determined by the density of the material. For example, lead can act as an excellent shield, but it is difficult to position it properly. If the lead shield is not placed properly, the patient may be obscured and the imaging process will need to be repeated. Furthermore, a lead shield can trigger the automatic exposure controls on an x-ray machine.

Biological shielding is related to the mass per unit area of the material. Usually, shielding strength is expressed in g/cm2. It is important to note that the shielding strength is measurable in g/cm2. As long as there are no cracks, the sheet can be used to protect a person from x-rays. A good x-ray protection sheet will help keep people safe.

Currently, x-ray protection sheets are used in diagnostic procedures. Leaded aprons are used to shield a patient's non-imaged body parts.
