(09/2021) Sales of tracheotomy products have recently been declining in acute care clinics: by 5.6 percent to EUR 15.5 million. In contrast, the pharmacy market, which is smaller at just under half a million euros, went up by around a sixth.

This is an analysis by consulting firm IQVIA of the reports DKM (German Hospital Market) and PharmaScope National Medical Devices for this issue of MTD. The basis is a twelve-month period: for the clinic April 2020 to March 2021, for the pharmacy May 2020 to April 2021.

Less with a cuff
In terms of sales in the acute care clinics, the products with a cuff, at EUR 10 million, are the largest group, down 8.2 percent compared to the previous comparison period. Products without a cuff stagnate at 3 million (-0.4%); Tracheotomy insertion sets increase to 2.2 million (+3.4%). In terms of sales, products with a cuff even lost 13 percent to 319,000 units, while products without a cuff increased to 112,000 units (+8%). From this it can be concluded that the average prices have increased for products with a cuff, but which have fallen without a cuff. Leading manufacturers in the hospital sector are Tracoe Medical, Teleflex Medical, Medtronic, Cook and Smiths Medical/Medex. These five together account for 91.8 percent of sales, the remaining 25 in this product market 8.2 percent.

Diversified pharmacy market
In the pharmacy sector, the dominance of the big five is not so pronounced: Teleflex, BMV, Fresenius Kabi, B. Braun and Fahl come together to 72.1 percent, the other 41 suppliers to 27.9 percent. Anesthesia tracheal tubes increase in sales by 12.3 percent and tracheostomy tubes / sets by 22.7 percent. They represent the two largest segments of the turnover of 455,000 euros (+16.5%). Unit sales, however, fell in both product areas.

database
The IQVIA DKM (German Hospital Market) is the drug consumption study by IQVIA Hospital Research. Consumption data based on specialist departments and wards are collected monthly via the supplying clinic pharmacy. The sales and sales volume of the entire hospital market is determined and its development compared to the same period of the previous year. Around 480 panel hospitals form the database. With the IQVIA PharmaScope, the data includes drug sales for the statutory health insurance market, private prescriptions and cash sales based on the sales of public pharmacies. The data basis for the statutory health insurance market are the statutory health insurance bills made by the data centers. The proportion of private prescriptions and dispensing without a prescription is collected on the basis of a sample of around 4,000 or 6,500 (from 2021) pharmacies.
