Implanted neurostimulators

Implanted neurostimulators

In order to successfully use implanted neurostimulators, the patient must first be assessed for the appropriateness of this treatment. The patient must be in good health and not be dependent on drugs. In addition, the patient must have the ability to operate the device without assistance. Infection or other complications may require the removal of the neurostimulation device. The procedure involves the implantation of several electrodes in close proximity to the spinal cord. The electrical wires are then tunneled to a subdermal receiver on the abdominal side. The internal receiver contains a pulse generator, which is activated by a radiofrequency signal from the external transmitter block.

Once the leads are in place, they are anchored. The neurostimulator's placement is monitored by fluoroscopy. During this procedure, the doctor must ensure that the leads have 80 percent coverage of the pain region to ensure successful implantation. A magnet is attached to the external part of the neurostimulator. The patient must wear a device identification card in case the lead malfunctions or an emergency occurs.

Implanted neurostimulators are a single-use surgical device. The electrodes and lead have been sterilely sterilized with EtO gas, and the device comes with sterile packaging. After three months, the patient can resume normal activities and exercise. However, contact sports, horseback riding, and skiing are associated with a higher rate of lead breakage and should be avoided for at least a year after surgery.

Patients with implanted neurostimulators should be aware that they should be especially cautious when undergoing radiofrequency ablation. Because the induced electrical currents may damage tissue, the procedure is not a good idea. A physician should designate a representative to notify emergency personnel about the implanted neurostimulator. The patient will also be given an identification card to let emergency services know about the implanted device.

An implanted neurostimulator should not be placed in the neck, or groin. Typically, the device is placed in the brain, and the electrodes are connected to an implanted internal pulse generator. The pulse generator contains a battery. The machine works like a pacemaker and can be controlled by a remote control. Its placement is critical for patient safety. If a second lead is placed in the brain, the surgeon should avoid it.

The main disadvantage of implanted neurostimulators is their size. It is difficult to find devices that are smaller than those that can be safely implanted in the brain. Moreover, they can be proportionally larger than other implanted devices. Because of the functionality, it is important to avoid some types of medical procedures that can disrupt the electrical signal to the brain. In some cases, a patient must be monitored closely to ensure the safety of their new device.
