In electronic speed control, the ESC detects the motor's rotation through back EMF, and then passes the detected value to the setpoint generator. The control loop repeats until the detection value is fixed, and the current is constant. The modern electronic speed controller has a microcontroller that understands the input signal. It controls the electric motor and changes its control output according to the current. Typically, the ESC will use two different methods: a'switch' to control the direction of revolution, and a'switch' to turn the circuit off or enable the system.

Another type of speed controller is a feed-forward control. This control method assumes that the user can predict the output and make necessary adjustments. This type of speed control has a control loop to regulate the overall velocity of the actuator. This control loop is designed to maintain the same values for all variables. Its 'feed-forward' principle applies to linear actuators. The AE-5 is a great example of this. The AE-5 has a dual-mode switch that is active when the battery is inserted.

A second type of speed control is a feedback loop. Unlike a conventional feed-forward controller, this type of speed control relies on the user to predict the output and make necessary adjustments. The aim of a speed controller is to regulate the overall velocity of an actuator. Hence, the feedback loop assumes that all variables remain constant. The output is always reported by the sensor. Axial's AE-5 is in live when plugged into the battery.

Another type of speed controller is the meter-in valve. This type is used to provide a small amount of airflow to the cylinder. This type is used on single-acting actuators and is capable of creating friction motion. Compressed air is pumped into the cylinder through a check valve in the speed controller, and the piston's speed is solely dependent on the pressure. Its meter-in feature limits the flow of air to the motor, and is best for applications where airflow is restricted.

A speed controller can be designed to control the speed of a linear actuator. Its three essential components are a voltage regulator, a battery eliminator circuit, and a processor. A single Si semiconductor chip is the only component needed for an electronic speed controller. A meter-out type will regulate the discharge flow and the cylinder's speed. A meter-out device is often installed on the exit side of the cylinder.

A speed controller is also known as a pneumatic flow control valve. This hydraulic safety device is designed to prevent damage to pneumatic components. It features orifices that control flow. Alternatively, it can also act as a pressure-control device. It is a specialized unit that is mounted on a PC board or OEM module. Its mounting options vary. The ESC is available in different capacities and can be used to set the speed of a motor.
