Stainless steels 1.4021 and 1.4117

One of the hardest steels available, 1.4021 is used in a variety of medical and sanitary products. This alloy's tensile strength makes it ideal for use in pump parts and shafts, but its low corrosion resistance and machinability make it an undesirable choice for marine and chloride environments. Despite its high tensile strength, 1.4021 is still considered a suitable material for many medical applications.

The standard specifies that a medical device is made from a stainless steel that meets the criteria specified in the EN 10088-1. The HRC value is derived using the ISO 18265:2003 standard for metals, and is used for a variety of purposes. For example, a surgical needle holder must not exceed a HRC value of 1.42. This is to avoid confusion between the EN 10088-1 and the HRC value.

Another common variation in a medical device is the number of sharpened blades. Typically, medical devices are made of stainless steel, but there are a variety of materials that have a higher HRC value. In the EN 10088-1 standard, the HRC value must be stated on a label. If the product is designed for use in a hospital, the HRC value will be included on the container.
