Infusion from coffee leaves - approval as a novel food

On the occasion of the current discussions in DIN Tee, we would like to inform you about "coffee leaf tea".
In addition to the pulp of the coffee cherry (see news from 02-2022), the European Union has approved an infusion made from coffee leaves as a novel (traditional foodstuff originating from third countries) in the EU. This product can be placed on the EU market since July 21, 2020.

The approval, the specifications and the conditions of use are laid down in the "Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/917 for the approval of the placing on the market of an infusion made from coffee leaves as a traditional food from a third country". According to this regulation, coffee leaves may be used to make an infusion. However, use in a mixture with other ingredients or in other drinks is not permitted.

The designation of the novel food to be included in the labeling of the food concerned is " Infusion of coffee leaves of the species Coffea arabica (and/or) Coffea canephora".

The traditional food is prepared by mixing a maximum of 20g of dried leaves with 1L of hot water. The leaves are then removed and the infusion is pasteurized (at a minimum of 71ºC for 15 seconds).

We can check these requirements analytically for you. Please ask us for an individual offer.

If you have any questions or special requirements regarding the scope of the examination, we will be happy to advise you.
