Passed tomatoes: Italian pleasure with deductions

Passed tomatoes are used in a variety of ways, especially in Italian cuisine: For sauces, lasagna, pizza and much more. They should be aromatic and free from mold toxins - but unfortunately not all of them.

Mold toxins, also called mycotoxins, are metabolic products of mold that can have a toxic effect when consumed. In a recent test, alternative toxins were found in tomato puree. These are among the mycotoxins and are often referred to as black mold. Food provides an optimal source of food for alternative toxins and particularly affects tomatoes that are stored at temperatures of 8-12 ° C. There are currently no legal limit values for alternative toxins in food. However, since a possible health risk is assumed, so-called “Indicate Leves”, i.e. guide values, are up for discussion.

The pesticide chlorfenapyr is one of the substances banned in the EU, but it was found in a sample. Other pesticides permitted in the EU were also found. These did not exceed any limit values.
