They also have a number of functional advantages over uncoated products.

With a coating, instruments can be used longer. They are more durable, scratch-resistant and easy to clean.
Compared to uncoated instruments, the smoother surface reduces the risk of infection and promotes healing.
Due to the black surface, light can be absorbed and reflections reduced, which also improves visibility during a surgery.
The black-coated instruments are translucent to radiation.
Surface oxidation, which can occur with titanium instruments, is avoided instead.
