Sustainability labeling for food: the new Eco-Score

Nowadays, customers no longer decide to buy certain foods based on price and quality, but also focus on aspects such as healthy eating and sustainability. The Nutri-Score helps consumers, for example, to decide for or against a product based on the nutritional quality. Now the new Eco-Score should also influence the purchase decision.

The Eco-Score assesses the environmental properties of a food within five levels, ie what kind of environmental footprint the product has. There are 16 categories that play a role in the evaluation of the product:

In addition, certain additional criteria can be used to collect plus or minus points. For example, you can collect plus points with sustainability labels such as “Demeter” and “Bio” or minus points with unsustainable packaging.

The rating scale includes five levels from A to E. A food with an A rating has a low environmental impact and a product with an E rating has a high environmental impact.

The calculation of the eco-score is extremely complex, which is why our international regulatory affairs team will support you in calculating the eco-score for your product. The team also checks your own calculations and is available to advise you.
