Ethylene oxide is being found in more and more foods!

In the recent past, numerous products containing sesame seeds, locust bean gum, xanthan gum and thickeners have been recalled from the market because the maximum residue levels for ethylene oxide were exceeded.

In the EU, food business operators are responsible for checking their products for residues as part of their own checks. The maximum residue levels in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 396/2005 apply . Depending on the matrix, these are between 0.01 and 0.1 mg / kg.

Ethylene oxide is currently found in many other product categories such as vegan cheese, instant noodles and dietary supplements , which must be withdrawn from the market immediately.

Food business operators are obliged to ensure the safety of their products and to have their products examined accordingly. If maximum residue levels are exceeded, suitable measures must be taken, such as removing the product from the market. In addition, the competent authorities must be informed, which will review the measures and their success.
