Tested dry food for senior dogs

Dogs reach a senior age on average from 7-10 years - depending on breed and size. In this phase of life, dogs need less energy because they move less and the nutritional requirements also change with age. For example, the protein and phosphorus content of the feed must not be too high and the protein must be easy to digest. Too much protein can stress the liver and kidneys of the animals and too much phosphorus can damage the organs.

Eight different dry foods, which are designated for dogs of senior age, were tested. Of these, six - i.e. the majority - only received the grade “sufficient” and one product “poor”. The reasons for this are not optimal protein levels, too few amino acids and potassium, and exposure to acrylamide.

Acrylamide is formed as a product of the Maillard reaction when products with a high carbohydrate content are heated and is carcinogenic.

According to this, the animals are not supplied with nutrients according to their age and are even sometimes exposed to acrylamide.

To ensure that dogs are still optimally cared for in old age, bilacon dry food for seniors tests their nutritional composition and pollutants. Our experts will be happy to advise you on optimal compositions based on the FEDIAF guidelines.
