Retractors

Hooks are hand-held retractors that have curved blades and handles. These devices are used to retract tissue around surgical incisions and wounds. New-Med Instruments manufactures retractors and hooks for a variety of surgical uses. Retractors are used for dissection of the intestines, stomach, pancreas, and skin. The purpose of these instruments is to separate the edges of an incision or wound during surgery.

Surgical hooks and retractors are hand-held devices used for a variety of surgical procedures. Their retractors are made with ergonomics, precision, and efficiency in mind. Some of the retractors have features such as fiberoptic lights and suction to enhance the surgeon's visibility. While most retractors are simple, they can be a very effective tool for certain surgical applications. A retractors with a blade can be used for both internal and external surgery.

Retractors are also commonly used in spinal surgery. They separate the edges of an incision and hold back underlying tissues or organs. Most retractors are simple hand-held instruments with a hooked or curved blade that can be controlled manually. Some of these retractors are self-retaining and can clamp in one position. Others are hand-held tools that spread tissue. A good example of such a device is the lamina spreader.

An assistant should hold a single skin hook downward. The second skin hook should be held in the non-dominant hand. The retraction is performed over the alar rim and the upper lateral cartilages. The converse scissors are used to dissect over the lateral crural cartilages. The retraction should be clean and traumatic. Incisions should be small enough that there is minimal tissue remaining on the lateral crural cartilages. If an accident occurs, the surgeon can perform a lateral osteomy through the incision.

Surgical hooks retractors are used in a variety of ways in nasal surgery. The single skin hook is used to lift the vestibular skin cephalad to the marginal incision. The double skin hook retracts the vestibule of the nose outward. The double skin hook is used to raise the vestibule. The single skin hook is usually the preferred method for performing this procedure. The double hook is a little bit more delicate.
