Measuring on the CNC machine for more productivity
hyperMILL® PROBING is the optimal and user-friendly CAM solution for programming measuring and testing processes directly on the machine tool. This shortens throughput times and at the same time ensures the quality of the components in medical technology.
A well-functioning interface between the CAM programmer and machine operator is essential for process-reliable production. But there are many hurdles lurking here, such as clamping errors, raw part inaccuracies or operating errors on the machine. Manual intervention and the associated machine downtimes are often hidden time wasters and increase throughput times. Thanks to in-process measurements with hyperMILL® PROBING, these hurdles can be overcome efficiently and automatically.
Before milling – set up the workpiece
OPEN MIND has designed its measuring solution for the entire NC machining. This starts with setting up the workpiece, when the probe systems record the zero point or ensure that the workpiece is optimally aligned.
Check raw parts
Due to deviations in the saw cut or casting and welding inaccuracies, it is often necessary to check the dimensions of the blank before processing.
Check clamping
In order to verify the clamping, the clamping jaw position can be checked by touching it.
Set up workpiece
Zero point definition (rotation): Raw parts can simply be touched in order to align them exactly with the machine axis. This ensures optimum clamping and reduces the number of rejects.
Zero point definition (position): The component zero point can be defined safely and quickly, and a zero point can also be set with a 5-axis machine.
During milling - measure and adjust
The workpiece is optimally clamped and the blank dimensions have been verified. In-process measurement, especially during NC machining, allows manufacturing errors to be identified early on and responded to, for example deviations in dimensional accuracy after roughing or pre-finishing.
Active process control
Inaccurate measurement of the tool or tool wear often cause errors and deviations. Thanks to active process control with hyperMILL® PROBING, these errors can be avoided. Here, a measurement is simply carried out after roughing or pre-finishing and the measurement result is transferred to the control. If deviations occur, these are automatically compensated during further processing. The program run can also be stopped if the tolerance is violated.
After milling - quality control
Before the component is removed from the machine, the component is checked in the original setting. The finished workpiece is compared with the CAD geometry in a target/actual comparison. Thanks to probes, many features can already be reliably measured on the machine tool, which can save an additional work step on the measuring machine. This results in shorter throughput times with consistently assured quality.

Quality assurance directly on the machine tool offers a multitude of advantages. The measurement results are automatically made available in the controller. This significantly increases the efficiency of the process and thus reduces throughput times. The measurement logs can then be output.
3D point measurement
A special feature is the 3D point measurement, with which free-form surfaces can also be touched. The measurement can be carried out on 5-axis machines.
