Selective laser melting (SLM), like laser sintering, is one of the methods of powder bed-based melting. A fine powder of the respective metal is available as the starting material. Similar to selective laser sintering, a high-power laser melts the cross-section that the later component is to take on this level.

The building platform then moves off by a layer thickness so that a new level of powder can be applied. This process is repeated until the final component can be removed from the powder bed.

Sucking off the excess powder lets the printed component appear and, if desired, prepare it for further processing.
