Vision process: So that attitude is manifested in action

Tuttlingen – The canon of values has been worked out, now it’s time for the recommendations for action: The vision process for the medical technology industry initiated by MedicalMountains GmbH is taking on more and more concrete form – getting closer and closer to practical implementation. "A very exciting phase," says managing director Yvonne Glienke and invites you to the next workshop on June 23 in Tuttlingen.

The amount of ideas, suggestions and expectations was enormous: over the course of the past year, eight working groups had each dealt with twelve megatrends and filled more than 90 tableaus with a number of branching sub-items. "We deliberately went broad at the beginning and gave room for visionary thinking," says MedicalMountains Managing Director Yvonne Glienke, "because the results form the basis for all subsequent stages". Accordingly, the time was taken to bring together, consolidate and condense the many thoughts - to vision elements and finally to the values, the "DNA of the industry".

Values, by definition, are the driving forces behind attitudes and behaviors. "Medical technology naturally has a lot to do with the inner attitude," recalls Yvonne Glienke, "responsibility towards the patient, the ethical dimension is tangible at all times." The vision elements developed by the end of 2021 were the inspiration for the joint development: Which values is currently shaping the industry - and which ones are needed to make the vision of the future a reality? Pairs of terms have emerged: leitmotif and a complementary sister value. "Both are needed for a balanced and sustainable implementation," explains Yvonne Glienke: "If you see 'openness to the world' as a leitmotif, for example, 'regional ties' is the positive counterbalance, with 'innovation' it's 'tradition'."

In this way, a multi-part canon has developed, which is divided into the umbrella terms "Think Global", "Sense/Purpose", "Visibility", "Innovation" and "Cooperation". And as with the values themselves, the inner attitude needs a positive counterpart: action. "This year it's about creating recommendations for action," says Yvonne Glienke, looking at the current stage of the vision process. The central question is: what needs to be done to create a balance between the pairs of values – so that the vision is successful? "Here we are looking for practical, very real approaches that are based on what already exists and integrate what is necessary," explains the MedicalMountains managing director. To stay with the example of "Think Global": On the one hand, there is a whole range of advantages of regional identity - from supply chains to the training of specialists. On the other hand, there are factors that require us to think bigger: digitization, business models or customer service. An implementation matrix with responsibilities, timelines and goals immediately pours the discussion results into packages of measures.

"The current phase is very exciting because it is about the concrete design of what was perhaps an abstract conceptual model a few months ago," says Yvonne Glienke. And while visionaries were initially in demand, now practitioners are also getting involved - as at the next workshop on June 23 in Tuttlingen, which will be dedicated to the topic of "meaning/purpose". "The vision process is always open to returnees and newcomers," she recalls. It is still about integrating the greatest possible variety of voices and thus finding a broad base of approval.
