Endoscopy is a medical procedure that allows a doctor to view the inside of the body. The endoscope is inserted through a natural opening in the body. The development of endoscopes began in the 1930s. In Germany, the first flexible endoscopes were produced in 1939. In Japan, the first semiflexible endoscopes used Schindler technology were only accessible to a limited range of internal organs. This method was used for the GI tract and later found applications in other parts of the body. During the 1950s, the AO licensed the technology to the Olympus Corporation, which was already producing semirigid endoscopes.
The advancement of endoscopic imaging has led to more accurate diagnostics and improved patient care. The introduction of anaesthetics into the market helped make endoscopy a valuable tool for doctors. Although this procedure may be more invasive than an MRI, it does not require overnight hospitalization. The patient may be awake, drowsy, or asleep throughout the procedure. During the procedure, the health care team will monitor vital signs and collect tissue for testing.
